A Home Does Not Have to Be Filled to the Brim | Part II
In the first part, I shared some of the choices and trade-offs around storage and budget in this custom-built home in Taoyuan. This time, I would like to explore two other things I care deeply about: leaving room for life to evolve, and creating circulation that feels comfortable in daily use.

03 | Leave Room for Life to Change
When planning a new home, many people hope to complete all the storage at once. I see it differently. A home stays with us for many years, while our needs evolve. Family members, daily habits, favourite furniture and even our idea of home a few years from now may all differ from what we imagine today. For this reason, we deliberately left space beside some of the cabinetry. Instead of filling everything with fixed joinery, we reserved room for movable furniture.
Leave Room for Movable Furniture Alongside Fixed Storage
A freestanding vintage cabinet sits beneath the bookshelves. It adds storage while introducing different materials, proportions and lines, bringing depth and a sense of everyday life to the space. Flexibility is another reason. Movable furniture can be rearranged or replaced as habits, family members or preferences change. Leaving room now keeps open the possibility of a different arrangement in the future.
Leave Open Space in the Bedroom for Changing Uses
We did not fill every corner of the bedroom. An open area can accommodate a coffee table, an armchair or other furniture as needs change. Track lighting at the head of the bed allows the lighting positions to be adjusted and leaves flexibility for replacing the fixtures later. Sometimes design involves knowing where to stop for now, as well as considering what else could be added. Leaving a little space open allows the home to remain flexible and change gradually alongside the lives within it.

04 | Comfortable Circulation Often Lies in the Details You Cannot See
Accessible design is often associated only with wheelchair users. To me, it is a way of planning space so that everyone can live with ease. As the household includes older family members and a wheelchair user, circulation was considered from the very beginning of the design process.
Level Floors Need to Be Planned Before Construction Begins
A level floor may look simple, but it requires early coordination of services, floor screeds and the thicknesses of different finishes, including tiles and timber flooring. Floor elevations need to be planned before construction. The height differences at stairways and transitions between flooring materials also need to be calculated before the floor preparation begins, so the finished surfaces connect as smoothly as possible.
Bathroom Thresholds: Balancing Water Containment and Ease of Passage
We kept the transition between the bathroom and bedroom as level as possible, while retaining a water-containment threshold of approximately 1.2 cm at the dividing zone to balance waterproofing needs with wheelchair passage. We also considered the route of the robot vacuum, so it could move freely between spaces without being obstructed by thresholds or changes in level. Good circulation is often not the most noticeable feature in a finished photograph, yet it is one of the details people appreciate most every day after moving in.

One of the things I like most about this home is that we did not try to complete every possible element at once. We chose to invest in some areas and simplify others. Some needs were met through fixed design, while other possibilities were left open for the future. I believe a home suited to long-term living does not require every decision to be made on the day construction is complete. Enough storage, comfortable circulation and a budget spent where it matters most, with a little open space left for future life to fill in over time. These are the design reflections I most wanted to share from this custom-built home in Taoyuan.
