Home Begins with Life | Part II

In Part I, we explored the needs revealed by the first few minutes at home and the everyday experiences behind the objects we wish for. Here, we look at how these clues can inform spatial planning, allowing daily habits to gradually shape a home.

Letting Everyday Habits Shape Your Home

Once we understand your daily rhythms, we explore the floor plan with your routines, your family’s preferred balance of togetherness and personal space, and your hopes for home in mind.

Take the entryway again. Beyond the sequence of putting things down, changing shoes, and moving into the shared living areas, we also ask: what would you like to see the moment you open the front door?

If you enjoy bright, open views:

We can provide ample storage while keeping the material palette restrained, considering views toward the windows and living room so that the space unfolds naturally as you enter.

If privacy matters, or family members keep different schedules:

A turn in a wall or a short hallway can create a gentle buffer between the entrance and the main living areas. Light can guide the way, while the layout leaves room for different daily rhythms.

These arrangements do not need to follow a fixed spatial formula.

Some people prefer continuous flooring throughout the home to a clearly defined area at the entrance for removing outdoor shoes. Others want treasured collections, well-read books, and favorite tableware to do more than sit inside cabinets; they want these objects to become part of the places they pass through and pause in every day.

Rather than beginning with prescribed zones or layouts, a home can grow from the habits of the people who live there, gradually taking a form that suits them.

How Space Responds to Daily Life: The Soul of a Home Lies in Everything Finding Its Place

A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body.

—— Benjamin Franklin(班傑明・富蘭克林)

When storage, circulation, and daily routines are thoughtfully accommodated, the practical workings of a home no longer get in the way. Everyday objects have a place that suits them, leaving us more attention for the things we truly enjoy.

In such a setting, it becomes easier to feel calm and at ease, and to enjoy time in our own company.

Imagine sitting at the dining table early in the morning, watching sunlight filter through the green leaves outside and fall softly into the room. A treasured painting or piece of calligraphy hangs nearby. Flowers you refreshed a few days ago rest in water on the table, and you cradle a warm cup of coffee in your hands.

There are no unnecessary distractions and nothing you need to orchestrate. You are simply enjoying a quiet, fulfilling moment to yourself in a space that feels familiar and comfortable.
